Lagos court remands three lawmakers in DSS custody

The Federal High Court in Lagos has remanded three Lagos State House of Assembly staff members in the custody of the Department of State Security Services (DSS) over allegations of assaulting its officers.

Presiding over the case, Justice Daniel Osiagor stated that he needed to review the charges before allowing them to enter their pleas.

The defendants, identified as Ibrahim Olanrewaju, Adetu Adekunle, and Fatimoh Adetola, were directed to remain in DSS custody until their arraignment.

According to the legal charge document (FHC/L/273C/2025), dated February 24, 2025, and filed this Tuesday, the DSS accused the three individuals and others still at large of conspiring to attack DSS officers while they were carrying out their official duties at the Lagos State House of Assembly on February 17, 2025.

The agency alleged that the defendants obstructed DSS officers without justification and engaged in cyberstalking by recording and sharing false information on social media, allegedly with the aim of inciting unrest and disrupting public order.

The DSS claimed that Olanrewaju, Adekunle, and Adetola conspired to commit a felony by deliberately misdirecting electronic messages on social media to embarrass the agency and its officials.

Further allegations stated that Olanrewaju and Adekunle used an iPhone 12 Pro Max to record and circulate misleading content, while Adekunle, using a Tecno POP 8, shared false information online to undermine the DSS and provoke unrest.

The alleged offences violate Section 516 of the Criminal Code Act, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria 2004, along with Sections 27(1)(b), 24(1)(b), 24(c)(i), and 11 of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Act, 2015, as amended in 2024.
