HURIWA Cautions Against Rivers Impeachment Plot

The Human Rights Writers Association of Nigeria (HURIWA) has cautioned against any attempt to impeach Rivers State Governor Siminalayi Fubara, describing such a move as unconstitutional and dangerous.

In a statement signed by its National Coordinator, Comrade Emmanuel Onwubiko, the group warned that Rivers people elected Fubara democratically, and any plot to remove him through illegal means would be strongly resisted.

HURIWA specifically cautioned the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, against allegedly instigating 27 lawmakers loyal to him in the Rivers State House of Assembly to initiate an impeachment process.

The group argued that political instability would disrupt governance and harm the people, urging Wike to act as a statesman and not a divider. “History will not be kind to him if he encourages his loyalists to plunge Rivers into prolonged instability,” the statement read.

The group further urged security agencies, particularly the Nigeria Police Force and the Department of State Services, to remain neutral in the political crisis.

It also condemned allegations of age falsification against the Chief Judge of Rivers State, Simeon Amadi, describing them as desperate attempts to undermine the judiciary for political gain.

HURIWA traced the crisis to the defection of 27 lawmakers from the Peoples Democratic Party to the All Progressives Congress, which Governor Fubara insists cost them their seats under constitutional provisions.

The group criticised the contradictory stance of the Supreme Court on legislative defections and warned that any impeachment attempt could trigger chaos, violent protests, and anarchy in Rivers State.

It called on President Bola Tinubu to intervene and caution political actors against actions that could destabilise the state.
