Nigeria Labour Congress Suspends Planned Strike After President Tinubu and Senate Intervention
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) has officially announced the suspension of its planned strike, thanks to the intervention of President Bola Tinubu and the Senate. I made this decision following the National Executive Council meeting of the Congress.
In a brief message sent to our correspondent on Thursday, Hakeem Ambali, the national treasurer of NLC, stated, “Protest suspended due to the Senate intervention and meeting with President Tinubu yesternight.”
The PUNCH reported that the NLC protest, which took place across the nation, including the Federal Capital Territory, prompted an emergency meeting between President Tinubu and the labour leaders.
Initially, NLC had made it clear that they would only suspend their strike if the government demonstrated seriousness about addressing their concerns.
During the protest in Abuja on Wednesday, angry demonstrators forcefully brought down the gates of the National Assembly in an attempt to meet with the lawmakers.
Following the meeting with Tinubu, NLC President Joe Ajaero confirmed that the President had made certain commitments. The labour centre is expected to provide further updates to the public soon.
