General Abdulsalami Abubakar visited President Bola Tinubu in Abuja to update him on his trip to Niger Republic..
Abubakar, an ambassador of ECOWAS, met with the President and other officials during his visit to Niger Republic..
Abdulsalami had a meeting with Tinubu and spoke to State House media on Tuesday. He said that their visit to Niger had been useful and they had opened diplomatic lines..
“The ECOWAS Heads of State and Government have made me an envoy to Niger Republic, and we were there over the weekend to see the military people and discuss to find a way out of the lacuna we find ourselves,” the elder statesman said, adding more details about his discussions with the President. That is why I am here this afternoon, together with the President of the ECOWAS Commission, to provide Mr. President with a report on our conversations in Niger.
“That our trip to Niger was very fruitful, and it opened the door for us to start talking, and hopefully we’ll get somewhere.”
“Well, like I said, we’ve started talking, they’ve made their own points, and then I reported to the Chairman of the ECOWAS Heads of State and President,” Abubakar said in response to the Niger junta’s announcement that power will be handed over to a democratically elected government in three years.. He’ll now consult with his colleagues, and then the ding-dong will begin, and we’ll hopefully go someplace.
Let’s hope diplomacy wins.”
