Three policemen from the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency and two from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps have been arrested by the Imo Police Command for allegedly harassing and extorting residents in the state.

A 37-year-old Police Inspector was also arrested for the same offense.

The command’s spokesman, ASP Henry Okoye, told reporters in Owerri on Tuesday.

He said that the accused were known for extorting unsuspecting residents, particularly Owerri youngsters, by utilizing Point of Sale (POS) devices.

“These are security operatives operating in Imo under the guise of Operation Search and Flush, harassing and extorting unsuspecting members of the public, particularly youths, for thousands of Naira.”

“They use POS, seize and check their victims’ phones, causing them untold hardship,” he continued.

Okoye told the public that action will be taken as soon as possible to complete the investigation and bring the culprits to justice.
