Benue governor condemns killing of three guards

Governor Hyacinth Alia of Benue State has condemned the killing of three members of the State Civil Protection Guards by suspected armed herdsmen in Gwer-West Local Government Area (LGA).

The governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, described the attack in an official statement as a flagrant affront to the peace and security of our communities. He expressed deep concern over the persistent security challenges in the area.

The tragic incident occurred on Monday at On-MbaAondo, Tsambe-Mbesev Ward of the LGA. The slain guards were reportedly on duty when they were attacked and murdered.

The killings sparked outrage among residents, leading to violent protests on Tuesday in Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West. In the wake of the protests, irate youths reportedly razed the Local Government Secretariat, the palace of the Chairman of the Gwer-West Traditional Council, a hotel belonging to a serving senator, and several other properties in the town.

“We appreciate the deep rage and frustration that has led to the anxiety at Naka, the headquarters of Gwer-West, including the regrettable burning of the Local Government Secretariat and the palace of Ter Tyoshin by protesters,” the governor stated.

He, however, appealed for calm and urged residents to exercise restraint in expressing their grievances. “While we empathize with the sentiments of our people, we advocate restraint and foresight in funneling this anger. Destruction of our own worths simply serves to frustrate the intentions of our government, which is devoted to building up peace and security in the state.”

Governor Alia assured the public that his administration is committed to ensuring the safety of lives and property across the state. He called on all security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible for the killings.

“It is essential that these marauding herdsmen are forced to do justice to ensure that they deal with the full wrath of the law. The security of our residents is paramount, and we will not rest until those culpable for this violence are held liable,” he said.

The governor further appealed to citizens to remain vigilant and cooperate with security agencies by reporting any suspicious activities in their communities.

“In these trying moments, let us stand banded together against violence and endeavor for peace and justice in Benue State. Together, we can conquer these challenges and establish a healthier environment for all,” Governor Alia added.

As of the time of filing this report, security has reportedly been beefed up in Naka and its environs to prevent a further breakdown of law and order.
