The Minister of State for Defence, Dr. Bello Matawalle, has emphasised that addressing the complex security challenges facing the West African sub-region requires collective efforts from all affected countries.
Matawalle made this assertion on Wednesday during a Gala Night held in Abuja to mark the 43rd Ordinary Meeting of the ECOWAS Committee of Chiefs of Defence Staff.
He commended the ECOWAS military chiefs for their dedication to promoting peace, unity, and regional development, describing their role as pivotal in addressing the region’s evolving security threats.
“Over the years, our region has faced evolving security challenges, from terrorism and insurgency to maritime insecurity and transnational crime,” Matawalle said.
“Yet, through our collective resolve and cooperation, we have made significant strides in tackling these threats.”
The minister reaffirmed Nigeria’s commitment to ECOWAS ideals and the operationalisation of regional security frameworks. He stressed that no single nation can effectively combat these complex issues alone.
“Tonight’s gathering is a testament to the enduring spirit of partnership that binds us together,” he noted.
“Let us renew our determination to uphold the values of professionalism, resilience, and unity in our collective defence efforts. Together, we shall continue to build a safer and more prosperous West Africa.”
Also speaking at the event, Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Gen. Christopher Musa, described the meeting as a pivotal moment in strengthening regional security cooperation within the ECOWAS community.
He urged the defence chiefs to reflect on their shared goals and reaffirm their commitment to fostering peace, stability, and development across the region.
“I am confident that the discussions and deliberations over these past few days have been fruitful and productive,” Gen. Musa said.
“I am sure they will translate into concrete actions that will further strengthen our collective efforts toward achieving a more secure and prosperous West Africa.”
