
The management of Osun State University, Osogbo, has confirmed the death of five of its students in a fatal road accident that occurred along the Ife-Ibadan Expressway on Sunday.
In an official statement released on Monday, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ademola Adesoji, disclosed that the tragic incident took place around the Balogun area in Ikire. Reports from the Nigeria Police and the Federal Road Safety Corps indicate that a bus coming from Ibadan collided head-on with an 18-passenger bus travelling from Osogbo, resulting in multiple fatalities.
Adesoji confirmed that 10 people lost their lives in the accident, five of whom were students of the institution.
The deceased students have been identified as:
- Olagbemide Dotun – 200-level Software Engineering
- Suleiman Farouq Adedayo – 400-level Law
- Ogundare Pelumi – 300-level Public Health
- Ogundare Elijah – 100-level Mechanical Engineering
- Olawuyi Mary – 200-level Nursing
One other student, Olagbemide Damilola, a 200-level student of Medicine and Surgery, survived the crash and is currently receiving medical treatment.
The university management has extended condolences to the bereaved families and assured them of moral and logistical support, including assistance with funeral arrangements.
The statement reads in part: “This tragic loss has deeply shaken our university community. Our thoughts and prayers are with the families and loved ones of the deceased. We urge our students, staff, and the entire university community to remain calm and supportive during this difficult time.”
The university pledged to continue monitoring the situation and provide necessary updates as they arise.
