A new crisis arose on Wednesday in Umueze II village, in the troubled Effium community in Ebonyi State..
The hoodlums, it was reported, stormed the Christ Ascension Church in the region to vandalise it, when troops on patrol in the neighborhood received news of the development and approached the location to stop them.
When the hoodlums saw the soldiers, they opened fire on them, ostensibly to scare them away.
Since 2021, the community has been embroiled in a lengthy intra-communal dispute between the inhabitants of Ezza-Effium and Uffiom, which has resulted in the deaths of over 4000 people and the loss of property worth billions of Naira.
A new incident happened only two weeks after the conflicting parties agreed to stop fighting..
According to the PUNCH, the Ebonyi State Government recently formed a Peace Committee to find a long-term solution to the conflict in the area.
An anonymous community source stated that in August 2023, the parties involved in the Effium communal war signed a ceasefire agreement.”
