IGP Launches Preventive Policing Initiative to Curb Youth Crime

The Inspector General of Police (IGP), Kayode Egbetokun, has introduced a preventive policing initiative, prioritizing dialogue over force in addressing cultism, drug abuse, and other vices.

Speaking at the Police Campaign Against Cultism and Other Vices event in Lagos, where he was represented by Deputy Commissioner of Police (DCP) Fatai Tijani, the IGP emphasized community engagement, education, and behavioral change as key to crime prevention.

“We must understand that crime does not pay. Many youths engage in cultism, drug addiction, and other vices that escalate into violent crimes. This initiative is designed to steer them toward better choices,” he stated.

Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) Olabisi Okuwobi, National Coordinator of POCACOV, highlighted the importance of involving parents, religious leaders, educators, and traditional rulers in the fight against crime.

“The IGP believes prevention is better than cure. Instead of waiting for crimes to happen, we are working to prevent them,” she explained, noting that the event’s theme, ‘Name, Fame, and Shame: The Consequences of One’s Actions in the Hereafter,’ was chosen to resonate with the Muslim audience during Ramadan.

To support participants, the police provided transportation and refreshments, ensuring accessibility for fasting attendees. Islamic materials were also distributed for guidance.

Okuwobi emphasized that this initiative goes beyond Ramadan, aiming for long-term impact. Through the POCACOV program, individuals willing to reform will receive mentorship and skills training, while strict law enforcement will apply to those who persist in crime.

“We are partnering with schools, marketplaces, and religious institutions to spread this message. If you are in a cult, renounce it. If you need help, we will support you. But if you choose crime, law enforcement will take its course,” she warned.
