The Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced an investigation into allegations of accidental killing of civilians during an airstrike in the Zurmi Local Government Area of Zamfara State.
The NAF spokesperson, Air Vice Marshal Olusola Akinboyewa, said to newsmen on Sunday that the force is concerned that there were reports of civilian deaths after the operation.
Recall that the incident occurred on Friday, January 10, 2025, during Operation Fansan Yamma targeting bandits terrorising the region. In an earlier statement, the force pointed out the success of the operation, saying that it eliminated several bandits, including a notorious terrorist kingpin, Bello Turji and led to the recovery of some kidnapped victims. However, it did not mention the civilian’s deaths.
Akinboyewa assured that the military has started an investigation to ascertain the accuracy of the allegations.
He said: “As a responsible and professional custodian of airpower for the nation’s security, the NAF believes in the absolute value of the life of every Nigerian. Accordingly, a comprehensive investigation is in progress to ascertain the veracity of the reports, the outcome of which will be duly communicated to inform and reassure the public”.
