The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control has sealed the Idumota open drug market in Lagos State.
NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Shaba Mohammed, said to newsmen during an enforcement exercise this Tuesday that the market was sealed on Sunday.
Mohammed said the week-long operation targeted other drug markets, including the Onitsha market in Anambra and the Ariaria drug market in Abia state, all of which supply 80% of drugs to the Nigerian market.
He mentioned that over 5,000 shops and warehouses were inspected, adding that armed security personnel assisted in the enforcement exercise.
He said the operation aimed to stop traders from selling fake, substandard, expired, and rebranded drugs, which pose serious health risks to Nigerians.
According to him, seven fully loaded trucks of suspected fake drugs, expired medicines, and drugs with human body part images were seized during the operation.
