Nnamdi Kanu Apologises as Trial Resumes Before New Judge

The leader of the proscribed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB), Nnamdi Kanu, has issued a formal apology over his past remarks against the Federal High Court and Justice Binta Nyako.

His apology was conveyed by his new lead counsel, Chief Kanu Agabi (SAN), a former Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice. Agabi also extended the apology to the federal government’s legal team, led by Chief Adegboyega Awomolo (SAN).

Kanu further expressed regret for his earlier verbal attacks on his previous defence team, which had been headed by Aloy Ejimakor. According to Agabi, Kanu acknowledged that his actions were unwarranted and extended his remorse to all parties involved.

The apology was delivered during a hearing before Justice James Omotosho, who has recently taken over the case. Chief Agabi sought and received the court’s permission to communicate Kanu’s message, stating he had already discussed the matter with the prosecution.

Justice Omotosho scheduled the next hearing for March 21, when Kanu is expected to enter a fresh plea as the trial begins anew. The case was reassigned to Justice Omotosho by the Chief Judge of the Federal High Court, Justice John Tsoho, following claims of bias raised by Kanu’s legal team against the previous judge.

Kanu, who was extradited from Kenya to Nigeria in June 2021, faces seven counts of terrorism-related charges. His apology signals a possible shift in approach as proceedings move forward under new judicial oversight.
