Presidential Candidate Fernando Villavicencio Assassinated at Campaign Rally in Ecuador

In a shocking incident that has sent shockwaves through the nation, Fernando Villavicencio, a candidate running in Ecuador’s upcoming presidential election, was shot dead during a campaign rally. The attack took place as Villavicencio was leaving the capital city of Quito on Wednesday, as reported by the BBC.

Villavicencio, who has been an outspoken advocate against corruption and organized crime in Ecuador, is known for his allegations of links between criminal networks and government officials in the South American country.

A criminal gang called Los Lobos (The Wolves has claimed responsibility for the attack), the second-largest gang in Ecuador with approximately 8,000 members, many of whom are currently incarcerated. Los Lobos is known for being part of deadly prison fights that caused many inmate deaths..

Believed to be affiliated with the Mexico-based Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG), Los Lobos is known for its cocaine trafficking activities. The gang emerged as a break-away faction from the Los Choneros gang.

This tragic incident is not the first instance of political violence in Ecuador, as just last month, the mayor of Manta was also assassinated. Similarly, in February, a mayoral candidate in Puerto López lost his life, according to the BBC.

Killing a presidential candidate during a public event in the capital is a bold attack… Gunshots were heard as Villavicencio got into a vehicle after meeting with voters.

Galo Valencia, Villavicencio’s uncle, recounted the devastating moment of his nephew’s death, stating, “We were just a few meters from the school when we were hit by a hail of about 40 bullets.” Valencia disclosed that his nephew suffered three gunshot wounds to the head.
