According to Nigerian security officials, abduction for ransom has become a way for terrorists to support their activities.
The ‘Anti-kidnap multi-agency fusion cell media and communication’ training was organized by the Office of the National Security Adviser (ONSA) in partnership with the British High Commission.
Rear Admiral Yaminu Musa (rtd), National Coordinator, National Counter-Terrorism Centre of the ONSA, stated that terrorism is mostly funded through ransom.
Kidnapping people and asking for money is a way terrorists get money.”
Peter Afunanya, spokesman for the Department of State Service (DSS), blamed the kidnapping on political, economic, and ideological causes.
“There is also a disorientation in family values.” The family has failed as the most essential part of society. Cultural values have also vanished,” he added.
Afunanya stated that the DSS has formed a specific squad to deal with kidnappings.
“Kidnapping has dimensions,” stated Nigeria Police Force spokesman Olumuyiwa Adejobi. A dimension appeared, and it was a kidnapping for ransom. Another arrived, the victims were abducted, a ransom was negotiated, and the victims were murdered.
